Song Analysis

“Gravity”

Gravity is working against me
And gravity wants to bring me down

Oh I’ll never know what makes this man
With all the love that his heart can stand
Dream of ways to throw it all away

Oh Gravity is working against me
And gravity wants to bring me down

Oh twice as much ain’t twice as good
And can’t sustain like a one half could
It’s wanting more
That’s gonna send me to my knees
[repeat]

Oh gravity, stay the hell away from me
And gravity has taken better men than me (now how can that be?)

Just keep me where the light is
Just keep me where the light is
Just keep me where the light is
C’mon keep me where the light is
C’mon keep me where the light is
Oh… where the light is! [repeat]

This is an analysis of the song Gravity by John Mayer,I will be analyzing this song as a poem, because songs and poems have countless interpretations within them.

For my first analyzation,I will be using the figure of speech Personification.Personification is very common in this song, since it is in the chorus:”Gravity is working against me,and wants to bring me down”.Those lines tell me that the writer of the song is trying to portray “Gravity” as the hardships in life trying to break him, trying to make him suffer.

The second one is imagery. Reading this song makes me imagine gravity bringing the writer down to his knees, akin to an image of  all the hardships and challenges being carried on the back of one person, holding him down, and the person wanting to just get rid of all that load, and even when you solve all those problems more keep coming. This can be shown in parts like “It’s wanting more,That’s gonna send me to my knees” ,”dreams of throwing it all away” and even the chorus “Gravity is working against me,and wants to bring me down.” the last part of the song also makes me imagine him trying to just stay in an area, full of light.Where there are no hardships or “gravity” trying to bring him down

Although I’m not sure if my interpretations are correct, this is how I interpret this song.Songs like this have countless interpretations just waiting to be found! Even though it wasn’t the writer’s true intention for people to have that interpretation, I think it is good that every person have their own interpretation.
